Bishop Alan says embrace the sound of silence in liturgy

The place of silence in Catholic liturgy has been addressed in a new document produced by the Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales and chair of the Bishops' liturgy committee, Bishop Alan Hopes, has spoken in a podcast about embracing silence in church and worship.

"We live in an extremely busy world and one that is not used to silence," said Bishop Alan. "Yet if we are going to help people discover God in their lives, silence is one of the ways through. God speaks to us in the silence of our hearts.

"Silence in the liturgy and silence in the church is a wonderful thing in helping people to rediscover their relationship with God."

“Silence and reflection after the homily during a Mass for example helps us to take the Word of God into our own hearts and our own lives before we go out into the world to proclaim the Gospel."

"We don't need to be afraid of keeping silent. If you are introducing silence into the liturgy, start with a short time and then build it up so that people enjoy the silence and know that it is coming.

“Try it and you will suddenly discover something beautiful comes from it and our liturgies will be enriched," said Bishop Alan.
