Bishop blesses school mission and student chaplaincy

St John Fisher Catholic High School in Peterborough has a new mission statement and a student chaplaincy team following a visit to the school by Bishop Alan Hopes on January 26.

School lay chaplain Luke Turner has been working on a new mission statement over the last year, which went to school council, then the governors. It was formally commissioned by Bishop Alan during his visit, in front of the school student council, with the help of Head Boy Glenver Miranda and Head Girl Vanessa Abankwa.

The mission statement says that St John Fisher: "Is a learning community striving to live the gift of life that God gave us. Everyone is a loved creation of God and every person has a lesson they can teach someone else."

Bishop Alan told the school council: "You have a fantastic school here, with an excellent head and staff who are here to help you discover your objectives in life and your vocation and to support you in them ' which is what Catholic schools are all about."

The Bishop also met the student chaplaincy team, which is made up of students from each house and year in the school and presented them all with small crosses to formally commission their work.

Lay chaplain Luke co-ordinates the team and said: "As I felt more comfortable in my role here, it seemed the next natural move was that the students step up and start making the decisions themselves.

"It makes sense that it is they that come up with the ideas and set the lead on things. Ideas around liturgies and charity things we might do around Lent come from them and they are the ones who really push it – they take ownership.

"I meet with the chaplaincy team, every week and we have lunch together and pray and discuss what's going on in the school and the things that are close to their hearts.
